The Prize, in the sum of $100,000, will be conferred by the President of the State of Israel, Mr. Shimon Peres, and by the Minister of Education, at a special ceremony, at the Knesset (parliament), on 13 May 2010
Jerusalem, February 3, 2010. Minister of Education and Wolf Foundation Council Chair, Mr. Gideon Sa’ar, has announced the recipients of the 2010 Wolf Prize in Architecture: British architect, David Chipperfield, who designed Berlin’s Neues Museum; and American architect, Prof. Peter Eisenman, who designed the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, in memory of the Jews of Europe who perished in World War II. Inaugurated in 2005, the Memorial is situated a bit south of Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, the site of the Third Reich’s Headquarters, which housed Adolf Hitler’s office.

The Prize, in the sum of $100,000, will be conferred by the President of the State of Israel, Mr. Shimon Peres, and by the Minister of Education, at a special ceremony, at the Knesset (parliament), on 13 May 2010.

In its decision, the International Wolf Prize Jury in Architecture determined that
Prof. Peter Eisenman
(born in the US, 1932) is an "
innovative architect and educator, who has advanced the discipline of architecture with theoretical texts and exceptional buildings of profound consequence. Indeed, Eisenman is the most important leader in the establishment of a meaningful discourse among architects, theorists and historians.

His numerous theories have transformed the structure of meaning in architecture.
Eisenman’s bold and unsettling portrayal of destruction and erasure in Berlin’s Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe provides a new paradigm for memorialization that confronts tragedy and loss in an unforgettable way."
Among Eisenman’s outstanding works: The City of Culture of Galicia, Santiago de Compostela, Spain; and the Wexner Center, at Ohio State University, USA.

In its decision, the International Wolf Prize Jury determined that Architect David Chipperfield (born in Britain, in 1953), has defined the tectonic language of architecture in an original way, as a refined and profound expression, both in large- and small-scale buildings. Chipperfield’s buildings "embody a masterful ability to combine a sensitive and responsible approach to large- and small-scale projects, with a precise and poetic handling and control of detailing and materiality. His projects provide unmistakable evidence of a meaningful relationship between urbanism and architecture.

Chipperfield’s solution to the reconstruction and addition to the Neues Museum in Berlin stands out as an exemplary work of subtlety and clarity, resurrecting a profoundly important cultural edifice, neglected by history, allowing it to rise anew from the ashes of a most tragic past."

Among David Chipperfield’s prominent works: London’s River & Rowing Museum and the Museum of Modern Literature, in Marbach, Germany.

Since 1978, the Wolf Prize has been awarded 27 times, to 253 scientists and artists, from 23 countries (among them, 18 from Israel), in the fields of agriculture, medicine, chemistry, mathematics and physics; and in the arts, in rotation, in architecture, music, painting and sculpture--for "achievements in the interest of mankind and friendly relations among peoples, irrespective of nationality, race, color, religion, sex, or political view."  The Israel-based Wolf Foundation was established by the late German-born inventor, diplomat and philanthropist, Dr. Ricardo Wolf, who served as Cuban Ambassador to Israel (1961-1973). The Foundation also awards scholarships and prizes to excelling students and researchers, from institutions of higher education in Israel.
